Selecting The Best Sump Pump for Your Home

Selecting the right pump is as important as any other part of your waterproofing system.

If a sump pump is under-powered for a job, it will not last. The motor will run frequently and never be able to keep out the water. On the other hand, if a sump pump is too large, it will turn on and off frequently. This is bad for a motorized pump and can cause it to burn out or need to be replaced sooner than later.

There are many options but ’58 Foundations & Waterproofing will make this easy for you. We’ll help you select the right-size pump with the right horsepower for your situation.

More About Sump Pumps

A basement or crawl space sump pump is a mechanical pump that is placed in a sump pit (hole in the floor) to pump out the water that collects in the pit.

Sump pumps are a necessity in basements or crawl spaces that leak. A drainage channel, wall leak protection, and a sump pump are the key components of a basement or crawl space waterproofing system.

As water accumulates in the drainage channel, it drains down into the sump basin. The water is then pumped out through a discharge pipe, to a distance where it won’t return into the basement or crawl space.

As it rains, water builds up against the foundation of your home. The higher the volume of water against your foundation walls, the higher the downward pressure becomes as water seeks its own level. This pressure causes water to find cracks and cold joints (where fresh concrete is poured onto set concrete) to leak into as it seeks its own level.

When this happens, basements and crawlspaces become wet or flooded. A drainage channel and sump pump are used in this situation to drain and pump the water away, alleviating the water pressure.

Pumps must discharge the water captured somewhere. Therefore, it is crucial that your drainage system, including your discharge area, are planned well. Some situations are more difficult to plan, but at ’58 Foundations & Waterproofing we’ve seen it all in 60+ years and will find the best solution.

A ’58 Foundations & Waterproofing expert will also know the local plumbing codes and the regulations regarding discharging water outside of your home – especially if it may enter a public sewer system or other public area.

The Basin and Lid for the Sump Pit

This liner should be a sturdy high-volume basin. It should not be a 5-gallon bucket, a laundry basket, or a small garbage can. Sounds funny, but over the years we’ve seen many less-than-ideal basins.

Features of a ’58 Foundations & Waterproofing sump liner include:

  • A sturdy plastic liner that won’t crush, rust, rot or allow mold growth.
  • An air-tight cover that prevents water vapor and odors from rising into the basement or crawlspace.
  • Prefabricated pass-throughs in the liner and lid to accept drainage channels and discharge lines and electricity to the pump.

Sump Pump Battery Back-Ups

The higher-powered, more reliable sump pumps run on electricity. Because power goes out occasionally, a battery back-up should be considered in the event that your home loses power during a heavy storm.

Without a battery back-up or electricity, your pump stops working and can cause your basement or crawlspace to flood.
