More About Sump Pumps
A basement or crawl space sump pump is a mechanical pump that is placed in a sump pit (hole in the floor) to pump out the water that collects in the pit.
Sump pumps are a necessity in basements or crawl spaces that leak. A drainage channel, wall leak protection, and a sump pump are the key components of a basement or crawl space waterproofing system.
As water accumulates in the drainage channel, it drains down into the sump basin. The water is then pumped out through a discharge pipe, to a distance where it won’t return into the basement or crawl space.
As it rains, water builds up against the foundation of your home. The higher the volume of water against your foundation walls, the higher the downward pressure becomes as water seeks its own level. This pressure causes water to find cracks and cold joints (where fresh concrete is poured onto set concrete) to leak into as it seeks its own level.
When this happens, basements and crawlspaces become wet or flooded. A drainage channel and sump pump are used in this situation to drain and pump the water away, alleviating the water pressure.
